Suspense Writing
Students in Level Three have been working on adding suspense to their writing by choosing highly descriptive language, based around the five senses. Here are some examples of this writing from students in 3/4 C.
Cold, cold, the shivering was getting worse and it was only the start.
“Who’s that?” I whispered to myself between sobs. I could see mist and rocks but there was something else. Something mysterious. I could hear the whistling from the shadows around me as my heart beat was getting faster.
“Ah!” I felt a velvet hand on my face.
“Drown your sorrows,” came a soft voice from behind me. By Amelie F
Cold, cold, the shivering was getting worse and it was only the start. I could hear the wolf running my way, and I was running for my life. Soon my legs were hurting and the wolf was gone. I had to find shelter fast, before night-fall. By Jamie I
Cold, cold, the shivering was getting worse and it was only the start. I could see snowflakes slowly falling from above. I smelled some frozen ice and then I opened my mouth and a snowflake fell on my tongue. I touched my pockets to keep my hands warm. Suddenly I saw big eyes, a long nose and sharp teeth. I felt anxious and terrified. By Maeve C
From that point I knew I was doomed. I slipped and stumbled across the tiny vessel, trying to keep it from falling apart. And then I saw it...a colossal wave towering over me. Higher and higher it rose as fear filled me, destroying my hopes of survival. Just before I was crushed, a smaller wave pushed me off the ship into the water. My ears rang and the water was ice-cold. I could see the storm going on. By Kyle R
Cold, cold, the shivering was getting worse and it was only the start. I could see the snow blowing all around me. I listened to the fierce wind blowing in my ears. All I could smell was the freezing snow. I could taste the icy wind in my dry mouth. I was terrified. Suddenly, I saw a light! I ran towards it. The last thing I remember was being knocked out... Professor Maths
To celebrate Education Week, the Level Three students took part in an incursion to celebrate the importance of Mathematics in the classroom. Professor Maths came to our school and the students had the opportunity to complete “Hands-On” activities.
After a quick introduction from Professor Maths, students completed each activity. They played in groups of four and five, developing social skills as they worked together to solve each problem. The “Hands-On”, activities taught students social skills, how to listen, to follow directions, to take turns, to cooperate, communicate and to plan ahead.
Some comments from Level Three students:
“ It was helpful and really fun.”
“ It was fun and made my brain exercise.”
“ Professor Maths was quite crazy, but still funny.”
“ I loved the wigs and glasses. Bring them again next time.”
Thankyou Professor Maths for a fun morning!
House Athletics Day
On Wednesday 19th February, Level Three students were very excited as they took part in the annual House Athletics Day at Bill Sewart Athletics Track. They were dressed in house colours and were excited to walk down to the track with the other students.
The students took part in different activities ranging from discus, hurdles, shotput and triple jump and still had time to cheer loudly and support their team mates. It was a great day as the students all tried their best and had fun at the same time.
To complete the day, the students competed against the teachers and parents in a quick sprint. Of course, it wasn’t the result that the students wanted, as the teachers were victors, again!
What a great day. Bring on next year!
Buddies
This year Grade 3/4 are enjoying learning and playing with Prep, Grade 1/2 and Grade 5/6 buddies. Having a buddy class helps the students become more independent and confident in their school surrounds, and have an older person who they are able to approach for help in the playground if they should need it. Buddy classes also have lunch together, share their favourite stories and play structured games in the classroom and outside in the playground. We try to aim to meet with our buddy class once a fortnight to share in these activities.
